Basic Lawn Maintenance Tips

A beautiful, healthy lawn is the first step in creating the perfect home. Nevertheless, that lawn has to be properly cared for and maintained if you want it looking its best all year round.

Here are some lawn maintenance tips that you should be aware of to ensure that your lawn stays as healthy as it can be:

Know your grassesBasic Lawn Maintenance Tips

Not all grass is created equal. There are different types depending on your geographic location, and the type that you have out in your front yard will impact how you care for it. Here in New Jersey, we have what’s called cool-season grasses, which can include the following:

  • Bluegrass
  • Perennial ryegrass
  • Tall fescue
  • Fine fescue

When to seed and fertilize

Because cool-season grasses grow during the spring and fall, you should plan to seed and fertilize your grass during this time. However, you should keep in mind that this is a general timeline, and there could be a more specific one that you have to follow depending on your location and your type of grass. For this it’s best to talk to a professional about when you should seed or fertilize your lawn.

Water often, and water well

You shouldn’t rely solely on Mother Nature to water your lawn. After all, there could be dry spells, and you don’t want your lawn ruined because it doesn’t rain for a few weeks. Instead, set up a sprinkler system that waters your lawn once a week. If it’s a newly seeded lawn, then water it every day for five to ten minutes. Once the seeds begin to sprout, you can do it once a day for fifteen to twenty minutes.
